La Puerta al Cielo....The Door to Heavens.

A reader asks...Why do they call this area the Puerta al Cielo? There are two versions that I know of and they both sound plausible. The first...Several years ago when this was the only road to Baños, and since Baños is almost like being in heaven...this was the gateway. The second....A few years ago this road was not as wide as it is today. There were many accidents with many buses, cars and motorcycles going over the edge. Today there are very few cars on this road but the 4-wheeler ATV´s are very popular and their drivers tend to go too fast. Sad to say, a few still use this door to the promised land.

why is this called "heaven's door"? and your photographs are beautiful, by the way... i have never been to ecuador but it looks like a gorgeous place...

I recommend the following:

I have been in Ecuador since April 2004 and still find Baños one of my favorite places to visit. I now live and work in Salasaca. From time to time, people still ask for recommendations for various services in Baños. Here are my favorites.

For a hostel you can't beat the Posada del Abuelo. Located just across the from Casa Real on Montalvo. A short walk from the famed hot baths.

For a hamburger....You just can't beat Hickory's. There are two locations and I imagine that the food is the same at each as they are part of a franchise; However I have only tried the place on the 16 de Deciembre, between Martinez and Rocafuerte. They are open only in the evenings after 5pm. Absolutely the best hamburger in Ecuador....Only $3 something.

For a complete meal...Casa Hood. Only open in the evenings. Run by a friend of mine and his wife. Oddly his name is Ray Hood. Located on Martinez just up from the back entrance of the big supermarket.

Does the activity of the Tungurahua Volcano give you concerns about visiting Baños?
	A little. But I will not let it spoil my visit to Baños.
	A lot. I have changed my itinerary and will not visit Baños.
	I will visit Baños but will spend the night in another community.
	I would really like to know more about the risks that I will be taking.
