A few days ago while walking along the highway close to Margarita Ville I saw a few new blooms of orchids growing on the side of the cliff and then I realized that the mountain side was covered with them. Hundreds and perhaps thousands in a two or three kilometer stroll.
This is just one of the estimated 4,000 species that grow in Ecuador. I am not sure of the name of this particular flower but will post it as soon as someone enlightens me. What a beautiful sight.

Hello Grandpa, Are you still alive. Haven't heard from you. Love, Jonnie and Brookie
ReplyDeleteRoberto,
ReplyDeleteThis orchid is a Sobralia- probably rosea. They are magnificent and even though the flower only lasts one day, they are one of the most exquisite. There is a really nice guy who lives in Banos (up on the mountain). His name is Lou Jost and he is a well renowned orchid photographer and he also does birds. The area around Banos is home to a HUGE variety of orchids- many of them are endemic. Some of the most wonderful are the tiny ones that are almost jewel-like.
